About: MEMORY CORE chiptune album!

Posted by BlackedIRL - February 8th, 2023

Hello everyone, this blog will be dedicated to talk more about the chiptune album MEMORY CORE!

If you want to see the entire pixelart post, click here!

In the art post I talked a bit about the origins of how this came about, but next I will talk exclusively about the current content L:

The album was uploaded to Youtube and Bandcamp on January 23, 2021, but worked on since October 2020.

As said in the other post, in the end the name was "recycled" (I'm not good at putting names), and since it's something miscellaneous, I used a more collage art, with the oldie computer in the center and the CRT effect, with a bit of the aesthetic of vaporwave and internetcore.

Working on the music, I decided to experiment more with the instrumental assets that evolved over time, and did my best to make it more in keeping with the classic chiptune sound, but on multiple channels (so to speak).

The album culminated in 20 public songs and 4 exclusive Bandcamp extras.

I must clarify that they were not created in the order that the album currently has, for example, "Voices from Spring" was the last song, in a season close to spring, while "Pumpkin Pie" was made during Thanksgiving

After that album, I guess I got better at developing new chiptunes to some extent, although I did do much more on covers.

The songs are as follows (including the exclusive ones):

  1. Voices from Spring (03:30). A song with a melancholic feeling, where the jingles and arpeggios resound mostly to the rhythm of the drums
  2. BrokenMan (03:03). This one is inspired by the classic beats of Megaman from the NES.
  3. Computers Magic and Samba (03:25). It's inspired by the music of Carlos Santana, but it's not exactly from one genre/subgenre, but it mixes a kind of more futuristic synthesizer, I gave myself more to the idea of "an organic song played by a robot".
  4. Tera (v2) (02:20). This is a remake/rework of an old song, it would be a more Drum & Bass style, with a sequence that could be from a video game.
  5. Pixelf (02:58). This one here is a mix between Drum & Bass and speedcore (although not that fast). The name is due to the fact that a set of instruments similar to flutes, violins and harps are used, perhaps used by elves or by creatures of the forest, so it would be a musical hybrid.
  6. Pumpkin Pie (03:58). This was done as a trip-hop or light rock, with a bit of a "lounge" tone.
  7. Any day is nice with her (v2) (02:59). This is a remake taken from an old album called "Couple Adventure", it's a more pop-like type of rock with happy/tender tones and arpeggios, due to the concept (something like "a young or adolescent couple going out on a day of fun). Maybe you can get to hear a small sequence that is familiar to you, it's an easter egg.
  8. Snail Coffee (04:08). This song could be more pop, it plays a lot with bass and drum with "clap" and noise. I honestly don't know why I put that name, I just remembered the snail that appeared in Adventure Time.
  9. Electro Wave (03:22). This song could have a little Drum & Bass, Techno, Dance, and some Megaman rhythm, the type of synth that works as a second Bass/chord is inspired by the music of Cyborg Corp. and Grendel.
  10. Spooky Fighter (02:31). This song is a finished version from a long time ago, I could say it's a remake, but the previous version was a beta and used the same sequence, rpm and key, only adding what was missing and using the new instruments. As seen in the name, it can give the idea of a cartoonish combat with a ghost, perhaps from an RPG.
  11. From Autumn to Winter (02:35). This song is a kind of light rock with pop, made during the beginning of winter. Its only context is something casual, maybe walking around the neighborhood, maybe on a trip to the grocery store.
  12. Look is Gletscherland! (03:00). A casual song, maybe for an RPG, maybe for a platformer, done with a sort of winter, ice theme.
  13. Last Bus Stop (02:16). This song is somewhat bluesy, for something a little more contextual and casual.
  14. Atomic Power of Whatever (03:04). Another song with Megaman feelings, some speedcore and Drum & Bass, it is characterized not only by fast rhythm, but also by strong chords and a heavy metal solo.
  15. Et Cor Machina PLUS (04:14). This song was taken from a secret OST, so it's for a game in development. This "PLUS" version has extra parts that it did not originally have, so it could be said that it is a "full" version.
  16. Mastermind (03:42). A Dance-Techno, Drum & Bass type song with cyberpunk feels
  17. Alone in the Darkness (03:15). Another secret song, belonging to a game in development. It is also a rework of an old song itself, however, it was a series of merely experimental space-themed songs, not really chiptune as such, and in any case, this version is much better.
  18. Cyberkiller Gladiator (03:58). A song in the Dark Synth style, it is not necessary to comment much if you are already familiar with this type of music. If not, it's eighties synthesizer and rhythms with dark sensations, sometimes adding heavy metal or electric guitars with strong chords, occasionally using "orchestral hits", claps and a drum & bass with a lot of distortion, sometimes with a cyberpunk style (in the original way).
  19. 2XXX (03:34). A more up-to-date cyberpunk style song, using mostly Drum & Bass and strong rhythms accompanied by Orchestral hits. In itself, the theme of the song is about a dystopian future with a highly oppressive government, always maintaining civil order with the riot police service. What inspired me the most to make this song was any scene where there was a fight between civilians and riot police, like in Akira.
  20. Every day is one less (03:43). A bittersweet pop-rock song, during that time it wasn't right even though it tried to show otherwise, just that. Also, it's the last official song on the album, adding a bit more to the metaphor.

-EXTRAS (Only at Badcamp)-

  1. Explosive Gumballs (03:31). One with Drum & Bass and a bit of Dance, I wanted to continue experimenting with Drum made with noise.
  2. Stop Media Control! (02:37). This song is originally made by Mig Navarro, a project partner. For next, with his permission I made the chiptune-arranged version. In any case, this song was also going to be part of a game of his authorship where I would have to make a part of the OST.
  3. Porygonic (v2) (04:39). This song is a remake of my first songs, that whole album was made to feel like a game, maybe platformer. It is one of the few salvageable songs, I did a remake of the album (so current Porygonic should be v3), but it still did not convince me. The type of arpeggio used for the main melody was done in such a way that you really felt like you were "hearing" something made of polygons.
  4. メランコリア (05:18). This song is entirely experimental, I can understand if you don't like it at all. It was made with the purpose of being vaporwave, first pretending to be a Smooth jazz or R&B/Soul type song (obviously, a non-existent song), already with the chiptune done and some indicators in the form of sound, I tried my best to sing only a fragment of what would be the "fake song", to then do all the trimming and sampling, put them in the chiptune fragments, trim and sample it again, use effects in an external program, and finally that song came out. The name translates to "melancholy", and the lyrics are "your smile is all you got with sorrow".

Here you can find the whole album at Bandcamp, and here you can go to the YouTube video!

(actually not a video)

And here you can find the Playlist in NewGrounds.

The list will be updated until the 20 songs are complete (, I was planning to upload it all in the same file but it is not possible (it is cut at just 8 minutes of the album), So stay tuned!

In each song there is the link to Bandcamp, if you want to just go for it, just click on the hyperlinked "MEMORY CORE"!

There you can download the whole album, either for free or naming your price! :T

Remember that if you want to use this album for non-commercial purposes, you should talk to me first, because there are songs that belong to other projects and one of them is not also from another person.

If you made it this far, thank you very much for reading! I hope this information has been to your liking and/or useful!

See you in the next blog :D
